Behind the scenes

Aura is powered by Butterchurn, the WebGL implementation of Milkdrop. When you drag in an audio file, the browser decodes it locally and feeds the audio stream into Butterchurn, which renders its signature psychadelic patterns to a hidden canvas.

Each frame of that canvas is downscaled and run through a simple threshold filter, producing a pure black-and-white activation mask. White pixels become active lines, tilting slightly left or right, while black pixels leave lines dormant.

The entire visualisation pipeline runs client-side in your browser, so you can just drop in your own track and instantly see it transformed into a beautiful field of dancing lines.
